Fieldays 2022

In other news – we are heading to Fieldays 2022!

After a couple of quiet years for events, we are anticipating Fieldays 2022 to make a strong return. Held across four days – 30 November to 3 December – our Forest360 tent will be situated out the front of the Forestry Hub area, on G Street (near Gate 1). So, we look forward to seeing you there.

We now have Isaac Murphy based in the South Island. Isaac joined our Land Use (ETS) team at the start of this year. Isaac has a background in commercial forestry, purchasing and managing forests for harvest and spent a number of years working in forest data analysis.

Fixed Price Option (FPO)

If your forest was harvested between 2018-2022, there may be an opportunity to reduce your carbon liability with the FPO. There are significant savings to be gained here, depending on your carbon balance. Carbon accounting works in compliance periods and the current period ends in December 2022. The end to the compliance period will also bring an end to the FPO opportunity.

We have actioned the FPO for a large number of our client base; allowing them to capitalise on the opportunity. We have a team of specialised carbon consultants. Please get in touch with us soon to find out if this opportunity could be right for you.

Land Use (ETS)

On writing, the carbon price is $81.30/NZU. The third government auction on 7 September 2022 cleared at $85.40/NZU. Pricing parameters for the next five-year emissions budget have been proposed but not confirmed. Click here for full details on these pricing parameters.

If you are thinking about capitalising on the current price, and looking to put your units to market, please contact our team and we can facilitate the process: 0800 366 700

Changes to ETS Carbon Accounting Models:

A reminder, if any of your forest land was registered from 1 January 2019, you will have the option to opt into one of the new carbon accounting models. We sent out a newsletter to our Land Use clients about this earlier this year. If you missed it, you could view it here.

Mandatory Emission return on the horizon:

The current ETS compliance period will end on 31 December 2022. All ETS participants must complete a Mandatory Emissions Return by the end of June 2023. We will send out more information about this process and what you need to do towards the end of the year. In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding this process, please contact us.

Forestry – Planting and Silviculture:

The 2022 planting season went exceptionally well with over 5000ha completed for this season. The 4700ha of radiata pine was completed in August, and in September, we planted 300ha of the more frost-prone and ground-durable Eucalypts, NZ Natives, and Redwoods.

We currently have a very large contractor base from the busy planting season which gives us plenty of capacity to carry out pruning and thinning operations until next planting season. If you think your forest may require tending, please don’t hesitate to get in touch for a no-obligation assessment and estimate.
